TL;DR: In PM Lee’s latest speech on 9 October, new SMMs state that non-vaccinated persons won’t be allowed to enter malls, shops and other establishments from 13 October onwards.
PM Lee called an “emergency” speech last Saturday and Singaporeans being Singaporeans – assumed the worst. Amongst the rising COVID-19 cases, and growing unrest in our communities, it’s easy to assume that the PM would call for another lockdown, or heightened alert phase.
Well it wasn’t an announcement of another lockdown, but rather a channel for the PM to address the nation with updates on the COVID19 situation. The bulk of his speech seemed to focus on those who haven’t gotten vaccinated, and encouraging seniors to get vaccinated to protect themselves from the virus.
The biggest news apart from the travel lanes – which garnered a lot of attention – was the fact that unvaccinated people can no longer eat at hawker centres, enter shopping malls from 13 October 2021 onwards.
Recently on TikTok, there has been a rise in content exposing Telegram chats of anti-vaxxers. Following the news, there was an uproar from the anti-vaxxer community, with most of them bitching about the government regulations and using unsound conspiracy theories (if not fuelled by Brad Bowyer, we choose to believe it was), to refute the government’s SMMs.
There has also been an increase in fake news passed around all over the internet, to the point where a woman had to be hospitalised for consuming ivermectin, influenced by her church friends.
Some anti-vaxxers have also taken it upon themselves to say that they have “superpowers” from not getting vaccinated:
Anti-vaxxers, this is your sign to get vaxxed.
As the government and society moves towards an endemic, it’s important to note that the virus will stay with us – we as a people have to find ways to protect ourselves against harm – and more importantly, not be brain dead by getting infected and in turn, harming others.
At this rate, anti-vaxxers y’all are at the risk of getting infected and dying earlier as a result of you conjuring up conspiracy theories that don’t exist or have not been proven. Also, it is important to note that the number of fatalities that we have seen on the rise come from seniors who have not been vaccinated.
Here are some key pointers and takeaways from the speech
Here are some of the actual things he talked about during his speech;
1. Vaccinations an effective “safety vest” against the virus
PM Lee shared the high vaccination percentage of the population in Singapore, attributing our low fatalities and infection rates to the fact that 85% of our population has been vaccinated. Of the 423 cases with severe illness in the last two weeks, more than half (53.9 percent) were unvaccinated. The rest were vaccinated individuals with several medical conditions.
2. Daily cases likely to rise for a few more weeks, ‘new normal’ three to six months away
PM Lee also shared on how as we shift towards an endemic state, our nation should expect to see a rise in daily cases over the next few weeks. Restrictions can then be relaxed as pressure on the healthcare system eases, but this will have to be done cautiously to avoid setting off a new wave of infections. There is also a lot of bitching going around on the internet on how some countries such as those in Europe have already reached this state. We gotta bear in mind however, that they paid for this “freedom” with their lives. We plan to get there in a careful and safe manner, with as few casualties as possible.
3. Everyone’s freaking out over protocols, so here’s some clarifications
Here’s a summary from The Straits Times article on what you should do in different situations:
Get rekt or vaxxed. Your choice.
