TraceTogether token or app is primarily for contact tracing.
In Parliament on Jan 4, Desmond Tan, Minister of State for Home Affairs, confirmed that the Singapore Police Force could obtain the data from TraceTogether for criminal investigations.
Many Singaporeans are quite concerned and upset over this due to privacy issues. However, what is there do be worried or upset about?
Only authorised officers have access to the data. With the legal provisions and safeguards for using the data, not all tom, dick and harry can access and misuse it.
As mentioned, the data is for contact tracing. Police could be using the data to contact trace the criminal footsteps to capture the criminal on the run or maybe, putting the criminal at the crime scene as evidence.
There is no reason to be worried when one did not commit a crime.
